Overview

• The University of Edinburgh, founded in 1582 is the sixth oldest university in the English-speaking world and one of Scotland’s ancient universities.

• The university played an important role in leading Edinburgh to its reputation as a chief intellectual center during the Age of Enlightenment and helped give the city the nickname of the Athens of the North.

• The University offers a wide range of courses at its 20 schools.

• Its College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine is reputed to be a world-leader in its field.

• The university receives over £200 million in research income. It spends over £26 million on prizes, scholarships, studentships and bursaries.

• At around £317 million it has the third largest endowment of any UK university after Oxford and Cambridge.

• A total of 19 Nobel laureates are affiliated with the University of Edinburgh.

• Glasgow is 1 hour away from Edinburgh and London is a 4-hour commute by train.

• Heriot-Watt University and Edinburgh Napier University and are some of the other Universities in the region.

• The university now has five main sites in Edinburgh: Central, King’s Buildings, BioQuarter, Western General, Easter Bush.

• Home to ‘Dolly the sheep’ – the first cloned animal. The 2020 Times/Sunday Times Good University Guide and the Guardian ranks Edinburgh 25th in the UK while the Complete University guide ranks it 16.

• The QS World University Rankings 2020 ranked Edinburgh 20th in the world.

• It is ranked 6th in the world for Animal Sciences,13th for Arts and humanities 73rd for Engineering and technology, between 51 and 100 for Chemical Engineering, Art and Design, Mathematics and Statistics, civil and Architecture and 46th for Electrical and Electronics.

• The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2020 ranked Edinburgh 30th in the world.

• It is ranked 11th in the world for arts and Humanities, 24th for health related programs, 79th for Engineering and technology, 26th for Life Science, 40th for Physical Sciences, 36th for Social Sciences, 24th for Computer Sciences, 18th for Law, 36th for education 22nd for Psychology and 55 for Business and Economics.

• The university is ranked 9th in the European Teaching Ranking. In 2018, the Academic Ranking of World Universities placed Edinburgh as 31st overall and 6th in the UK.

• Edinburgh was ranked 31st in the world (5th in the UK) in the 2016 Round University Ranking.

• In 2019, it ranked 61st among the universities around the world by SCImago Institutions Rankings.

• According to the Complete University Guide 2020 it is ranked 16th nationally.
