Australian Student Visa (Subclass 500) Process

The Australian Student Visa (Subclass 500) replaced the previous subclass 573, 574, 575, 576 visas. It is a single streamlined visa for all international students studying in Australia. InterEd's 98% visa success rate is built on meticulous document preparation and GTE statement coaching.

Step 1

Receive Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE)

After accepting your offer and paying the deposit, the university issues your CoE (electronic document). This is the Australian equivalent of the US I-20 — mandatory for visa application.

Step 2

Create ImmiAccount on the DOHA Portal

Register at immi.homeaffairs.gov.au. All Australian visa applications are submitted online through ImmiAccount. Do not use third-party sites claiming to be the Australian government.

Step 3

Complete Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC)

OSHC is mandatory for the full duration of your student visa. Cost: AUD $550–$650/year for a single student. Major providers: Medibank, Bupa, NIB, CBHS. Your university may arrange it; confirm before applying.

Step 4

Gather Financial Evidence

You must show funds for first year: tuition + AUD $29,710/year living costs + travel costs (AUD $2,000–$4,000). Bank statements, FD certificates, education loan sanction letters are accepted. InterFx helps you present your finances optimally.

Step 5

Write Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) Statement

The GTE requirement is unique to Australia. You must convince the visa officer that you genuinely intend to study temporarily and have strong ties to India. This is a critical step — InterEd's counsellors coach every student on a compelling GTE statement.

Step 6

Submit Visa Application Online

Pay visa application fee (AUD $710 as of 2025). Upload all documents: CoE, OSHC, passport, financials, GTE statement, English test scores, academic transcripts. Average processing time: 4–8 weeks.

Step 7

Biometrics & Medical (if required)

Some applicants must complete a medical examination at an approved panel physician (available in Chennai, Bangalore, Mumbai). Biometrics are collected at Australian visa application centres in Chennai and Mumbai.

Cost of Studying in Australia for Indian Students

Australian tuition fees are generally lower than USA and comparable with the UK. The key advantage is the ability to work 48 hours per fortnight during studies, meaning many students earn AUD $800–$1,500/month which significantly offsets living costs.

Indian & Tamil Community in Australia

Life as an Indian Student in Australia — Community, Culture & Support

Australia is home to over 700,000 Indian-Australians — one of the fastest-growing diaspora communities globally. For students from Tamil Nadu, the transition to Australia is made easier by active Tamil Sangams, South Indian temples, Indian grocery stores and a strong university-level Indian student community. You will never feel truly alone in Australia as an Indian student.

🕌 Temples & Festivals

Major South Indian temples in Sydney (Sri Venkateswara Temple, Helensburgh), Melbourne (Shiva Vishnu Temple, Carrum Downs), Brisbane and Adelaide. Diwali, Pongal and Tamil New Year are celebrated widely. Many Indian student associations host Holi, Navratri and Onam events on campus.

🛒 Indian Grocery & Food

Indian grocery stores (Indian Spice Centre, Subzi Mandi, Harris Farm) are available in all major cities. South Indian restaurants serving idli, dosa, biryani and chettinad cuisine are widely available in Parramatta (Sydney), Dandenong (Melbourne) and Sunnybank (Brisbane). Cooking South Indian meals at home is practical and affordable.

🤝 Tamil Sangams Australia

Active Tamil Sangams in Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Brisbane and Perth organise cultural events, sports tournaments and networking meetups specifically for Tamil-speaking community members. Tamil students from Namakkal, Erode and Salem districts have well-established WhatsApp groups and senior-student mentoring networks in Melbourne and Sydney.

🏥 Healthcare for Indians

Many Australian GPs and medical centres in Indian-concentrated suburbs are Indian-origin doctors comfortable with Ayurvedic sensitivities. OSHC covers most GP visits — typically $0–$40 out-of-pocket per visit. University health centres provide mental health counselling, which is freely available and highly recommended for managing first-semester academic stress.

How to Write a Strong GTE Statement for Australia Visa

GTE (Genuine Temporary Entrant) Coaching — InterEd's Proven Framework

The GTE statement is the most unique and critical part of the Australian student visa — it has no equivalent in USA or UK visa systems. A poorly written GTE is the #1 reason for Australian student visa refusals for Indian students. InterEd's GTE coaching framework has contributed to our 98% visa success rate.

✅ What to Include in Your GTE
  • Why this specific Australian university and course (be very specific)
  • How this qualification advances your career goals in India
  • Your family ties to India (parents, siblings, property, land)
  • Your career plan after returning to India
  • Why this course is not available in India at the same quality level
  • Your previous academic performance and future study plan
  • Financial capacity and sponsor details
  • Any previous Australia visits or visa history (honest disclosure)
❌ Common GTE Mistakes to Avoid
  • Using generic templates or copy-pasted content (officers recognise these instantly)
  • Mentioning immigration intention or desire to stay permanently
  • Vague career plans without specific details
  • Not explaining why Australia over India for this specific study
  • Inconsistency between GTE and SOP
  • Not addressing gaps in employment or study history
  • Overstating financial capacity beyond what documents show

AHPRA Registration — Nursing Pathway for Indian Students

How Indian Nurses Can Register and Work in Australia

Australia faces one of the most severe nursing shortages in the developed world, making it one of the best destinations for Indian nurses and healthcare graduates. The AHPRA (Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency) registration is mandatory to work as a nurse in Australia. Here is the pathway for Indian nursing graduates:

1
IELTS/OET Score: IELTS 7.0 in all four bands OR OET Grade B minimum (no band below). This is the first and often most challenging requirement for Indian nurses. InterLing provides specialised OET coaching with healthcare scenario practice.
2
Skills Assessment (ANMAC): Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council assesses your Indian nursing qualification. Indian B.Sc Nursing (4-year) is typically recognised. Diploma holders may need a bridging program.
3
AHPRA Registration: After successful ANMAC assessment and English proof, apply for AHPRA registration as a Registered Nurse. Processing time: 6–12 weeks. Once registered, you can work in Australian hospitals immediately.
4
Skilled Migration (PR): Registered Nurses (ANZSCO 254111) are on Australia's MLTSSL — meaning they qualify for Subclass 189 PR without state nomination. This is one of the fastest pathways to Australian PR for Indian healthcare professionals.

50 FAQs: Study in Australia for Indian Students — InterEd Guide

Australia offers several unique advantages over the USA and UK: (1) Post-study work rights of 2–4 years with unrestricted employment — better than UK's 2 years and far better than USA's OPT process; (2) Clear and transparent PR pathway through skilled migration points system; (3) 48 hrs/fortnight work rights during studies — unlimited during breaks; (4) Tuition fees lower than USA, comparable to UK; (5) No GRE/GMAT required for most programs; (6) English-speaking, safe multicultural country with large Indian-Tamil community. For students prioritising post-study work, PR and quality of life, Australia is often the top choice over the USA or UK.
Subclass 500 is the primary student visa for international students in Australia, replacing multiple older student visa categories. It is applied for online through ImmiAccount at immi.homeaffairs.gov.au. Key requirements: valid CoE from an Australian university, OSHC (Overseas Student Health Cover), proof of financial capacity (AUD $29,710/year living costs + tuition + travel), Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) statement, English test scores (IELTS 6.0+), academic transcripts, and valid passport. Application fee: AUD $710. Processing time: 4–8 weeks. InterEd has a 98% Subclass 500 visa success rate built on thorough document preparation and GTE coaching.
The GTE (Genuine Temporary Entrant) is a unique requirement for the Australian student visa. You must demonstrate to the visa officer that you genuinely intend to study temporarily in Australia and will return to India after your studies, rather than using the student visa as a backdoor immigration pathway. Key factors assessed: your economic and social ties to India (family, property, career), how the Australian qualification aligns with your career goals in India, why you chose this particular course and university, your academic history and capacity to complete the program, and your immigration history. A well-written GTE statement is critical — InterEd's counsellors coach every student on crafting a compelling, honest GTE that addresses all assessment criteria.
IELTS requirements vary by university and program level: Undergraduate programs: IELTS 6.0–6.5 overall (minimum 5.5–6.0 in each band); Postgraduate (Master's/PhD): IELTS 6.5–7.0 overall (minimum 6.0–6.5 in each band); Healthcare/Nursing programs: IELTS 7.0 overall with no band below 7.0 (strictest requirement in Australia); MBA programs: IELTS 6.5–7.0. Australia also accepts PTE Academic (50–65+), TOEFL iBT (72–94+), and Cambridge CAE (169–185+). Many universities accept OET (Occupational English Test) for healthcare programs. InterLing provides IELTS, PTE and OET coaching with score guarantee — if you don't achieve your target score after completing the program, coaching continues at no extra cost.
No — unlike US universities, the vast majority of Australian postgraduate programs do NOT require GRE or GMAT. Most Master's programs admit students based on undergraduate GPA, IELTS/PTE scores, SOP, LORs and work experience. Some competitive MBA programs at University of Melbourne Business School, UNSW Business School and Macquarie Business School may optionally consider GMAT (650+ is competitive), but even these often waive it for strong academic profiles. This is a significant advantage for Indian students who want to avoid the time and cost of GRE/GMAT preparation. InterWise identifies whether any of your target programs require standardized tests and advises accordingly.
Australian student visa (Subclass 500) holders can work 48 hours per fortnight (2-week period) during the academic semester — approximately 24 hours per week. This is among the most generous student work rights in the world. During official university holidays and semester breaks, there is NO hour restriction — you can work full-time. This means many Indian students earn AUD $800–$1,400 per fortnight part-time during semester. Australia's minimum wage is AUD $24.10/hour (2025), meaning 48 hours per fortnight earns approximately AUD $1,157 before tax. Over a 2-year Master's program, part-time work can contribute AUD $25,000–$40,000 toward your education costs.
The Temporary Graduate Visa (Subclass 485) allows international graduates from Australian universities to live and work in Australia after completing their degree. Duration: Bachelor's or Master's by coursework — 2 years; Master's by research — 3 years; PhD — 4 years; graduates from regional universities may get an extra 1–2 years. The 485 visa grants full, unrestricted work rights — any employer, any occupation, any city. You can use it to gain Australian work experience which earns points toward skilled migration PR visas (Subclass 189/190). Most Indian students use this visa to secure their first professional job in Australia. InterBuddy's career support helps graduates optimize their 485 visa period for PR applications.
Total cost for a 2-year Master's program in Australia: Tuition: AUD $60,000–$96,000 (₹32–52 lakhs); Living costs (2 years): AUD $35,000–$50,000 (₹19–27 lakhs); OSHC: AUD $1,100–1,300; Travel and miscellaneous: AUD $4,000–6,000. Total: AUD $100,000–$155,000 (₹54–83 lakhs) gross. However, part-time work earnings of AUD $25,000–$40,000 over 2 years significantly reduce the net cost. Scholarships can reduce tuition by AUD $5,000–$25,000. Australian education loans from Indian banks (HDFC Credila, Avanse, SBI) cover up to ₹75 lakhs. InterFx and InterWise work together to identify the most financially optimal university and funding combination for your budget.
Australia has one of the most accessible PR pathways for international graduates: (1) Complete Australian degree → Get 485 work visa (2–4 years) → Gain 1–3 years Australian work experience → Apply for Subclass 189 (Skilled Independent) or 190 (State Nominated) PR visa. Points required: 65 minimum (85+ competitive). Points earned by Indian graduates: Age (18–24: 30 pts, 25–32: 25 pts), Australian degree (+10 pts), Australian work experience (+5–15 pts), IELTS 8+ (+20 pts), occupation on skills list (+). Healthcare, engineering, IT and accounting graduates have the highest demand on Australia's skilled occupation lists. Studying in regional areas (Adelaide, Perth, regional Queensland) earns extra points. InterEd's counsellors can map out your complete India-to-Australian-PR pathway from Day 1.
The Group of Eight (Go8) are Australia's eight most prestigious research-intensive universities — Australia's equivalent of the US Ivy League: (1) University of Melbourne (#14 QS); (2) University of Sydney (#18 QS); (3) UNSW Sydney (#19 QS); (4) Australian National University (ANU) (#34 QS); (5) University of Queensland (#37 QS); (6) Monash University (#42 QS); (7) University of Adelaide (#89 QS); (8) University of Western Australia (#90 QS). Go8 universities offer the strongest research facilities, highest graduate employment rates and best brand recognition with international employers. However, non-Go8 universities like RMIT, Macquarie, Curtin and Deakin often have better industry connections and more accessible entry requirements for some programs.
Australia is consistently ranked among the world's safest and most liveable countries. Violent crime rates are low by global standards. University campuses have security services and emergency support systems. Cities like Adelaide, Canberra and Melbourne regularly top global liveability indices. The large Indian diaspora (700,000+) means Indian students rarely feel isolated. Like any country, exercise standard safety practices: avoid walking alone late at night in unfamiliar areas, use ride-share services for late-night transport, register with your university's international student support office, and keep emergency contacts saved. InterBuddy's 24/7 helpline provides immediate support for any safety or emergency situation Indian students face in Australia.
For the Australian student visa (Subclass 500), the Department of Home Affairs accepts: IELTS Academic (6.0+ overall for most courses); PTE Academic (50–65+ depending on course); TOEFL iBT (64–94+); Cambridge C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency (169–185+); OET (Occupational English Test — specifically for healthcare programs); Duolingo English Test (95–120+ — accepted by some universities but not for nursing or medicine). Each university sets its own minimum score, which may be higher than the visa minimum. Healthcare and nursing programs typically require IELTS 7.0 in all four bands. InterLing offers coaching for IELTS, PTE, TOEFL and OET with a score guarantee program for Australian university requirements.
Australian universities generally have more flexible CGPA requirements than US or UK universities. Group of Eight (Go8) universities typically expect 6.5–7.5+ CGPA (on 10-point Indian scale) for competitive Master's programs. Mid-tier universities (RMIT, Macquarie, Curtin, Deakin) accept 5.5–6.5 CGPA with a strong SOP and relevant work experience. Many universities have a "credit" entry requiring 65%+ aggregate (Indian equivalent). Universities in regional areas (Charles Sturt, Federation, USQ) are more flexible and accept 5.0–5.5 CGPA in some cases. Academic backlogs must be explained in your SOP — a completion record is more important than a perfect score. InterWise identifies the right universities for your specific CGPA, English score and career goals.
OSHC (Overseas Student Health Cover) is mandatory health insurance for international students in Australia, required as a condition of the student visa. It covers GP visits, specialist consultations, hospital treatment, emergency ambulance, and some prescription medicines. Cost: AUD $550–$700/year for a single student (family coverage is higher). Major OSHC providers: Medibank (most popular with Indian students — has Hindi-speaking support), Bupa, NIB, CBHS, AHM. Some universities have arrangements with specific providers and may include OSHC in your offer letter. You must have valid OSHC for the full duration of your student visa. InterEd helps you compare and purchase the most suitable OSHC before your visa application.
Some pathways exist to study in Australia without IELTS: (1) PTE Academic — accepted by all Australian universities and for the visa; (2) TOEFL iBT — accepted by most universities; (3) Completing 2 years of study in English-medium institutions in India (some universities may waive tests — check each institution's policy); (4) English foundation programs at Australian university pathway colleges (eliminates IELTS need for the foundation year); (5) Some universities accept 12 years of English-medium schooling from India. However, for the student visa itself, an approved English test is almost always required unless your previous study qualifies for an exemption. InterLing recommends PTE Academic as the fastest route to achieving required scores — most students score significantly better in PTE than IELTS.
Top Australian IT/CS programs for Indian students: (1) University of Melbourne (MIT — Master of Information Technology, highly ranked); (2) UNSW Sydney (CS and Cybersecurity programs, strong fintech industry connection); (3) Monash University (Data Science, AI, IT — large Indian student community); (4) Australian National University (CS, computational sciences — strong for research); (5) University of Queensland (IT, Data Science, AI — Brisbane tech market growing); (6) RMIT University (CS, Data Science, Cybersecurity — Melbourne tech hub, co-op focus); (7) Macquarie University (IT, Data Science — Sydney connections); (8) Deakin University (Cybersecurity — strong industry partnerships). Average starting salary for IT graduates in Australia: AUD $75,000–$110,000. The Sydney and Melbourne tech markets are the strongest for Indian IT graduates.

Yes — nursing is one of the highest-demand occupations in Australia for Indian graduates. Australia faces a chronic shortage of registered nurses, with government projections indicating a deficit of 100,000+ nurses by 2030. Registered nurses appear on Australia's Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL) — meaning they qualify for Subclass 189 (independent) PR without state nomination. Starting salary for registered nurses: AUD $65,000–$90,000 with overtime common. Indian nurses with AHPRA (Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency) registration can work in both public and private hospitals. Key requirement: IELTS 7.0 in all four bands (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking) — no band below 7.0. OET (Occupational English Test) at minimum Grade B is also accepted. InterLing specialises in OET coaching for Indian nursing graduates targeting Australian registration and employment.

Yes. Your spouse/de facto partner and dependent children can accompany you to Australia on a student visa as secondary applicants. A secondary Student visa holder (spouse) typically has the same work rights as the primary applicant — 48 hrs/fortnight if the primary student is in a Master's or PhD program, or unlimited if primary is doing a PhD. Children can attend Australian schools (tuition fees may apply for public schools). Financial evidence must include additional funds for dependents — approximately AUD $12,000/year for a spouse and AUD $4,000/year per additional child. Your accommodation must also be large enough to house dependents. InterFx helps Tamil Nadu families plan the additional financial requirements for bringing family members to Australia.
These are Australia's primary skilled migration pathways for Indian graduates: Subclass 189 (Skilled Independent Visa) — permanent visa, no sponsorship required, based purely on points (65 minimum, 85+ competitive). Most difficult to obtain due to high point requirements. Subclass 190 (State/Territory Nominated) — permanent visa, requires nomination by an Australian state or territory government. Offers 5 extra points. More accessible than 189 as states actively recruit in-demand occupations. Available in SA, QLD, WA, Tasmania, ACT. Subclass 491 (Regional Skilled) — temporary (5 years) visa, nominated by a state or territory for work in regional Australia. Earns 15 extra points. After 3 years in regional area, you can apply for Subclass 191 (permanent). Good for Tamil Nadu students with lower points who are willing to live in regional areas initially. InterEd can map your complete PR pathway based on your occupation, qualifications and location preferences.

PTE Academic (Pearson Test of English) is a computer-based English test fully accepted by all Australian universities and for the Subclass 500 student visa. Many Indian students prefer PTE over IELTS for several reasons: (1) Results in 48 hours — no 2-week wait; (2) Computer scoring is objective — no examiner bias; (3) Speaking is recorded, not live — many find this less stressful; (4) Tests are available more frequently with flexible scheduling; (5) Historically, Indian engineers and STEM graduates tend to score higher in PTE than IELTS. Required PTE scores: UG programs: 50–58; PG programs: 58–65; Healthcare/Nursing: 65 (no band below 65). InterLing provides specialised PTE coaching with AI-powered adaptive practice and full mock tests to help Tamil Nadu students achieve their required scores.
The Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) is the Australian equivalent of the US I-20. It is an electronic document issued by your Australian university after you: (1) accept the formal offer of admission, (2) pay the enrollment deposit (typically AUD $2,000–$5,000) and OSHC. The CoE contains your student ID, program start and end dates, total tuition, and CRICOS code (the university's registration code). You cannot apply for a student visa without a CoE. Universities typically issue CoEs within 5–14 business days of payment. If you are applying to multiple universities, you will receive multiple CoEs but can only apply for one student visa (for your chosen university). InterWise tracks your CoE receipt as part of the post-admission timeline management.
Several alternatives to IELTS are available for Australian study: (1) PTE Academic — widely accepted by all Australian universities and for the visa; (2) TOEFL iBT — accepted by most universities; (3) OET — accepted for healthcare programs; (4) Cambridge C1/C2 Advanced — accepted by many universities; (5) Duolingo English Test — accepted by some universities (not for nursing/medicine programs); (6) Some universities offer English foundation pathway programs that allow entry without a pre-study English test — you complete English training first, then progress to the degree. Additionally, students who have completed at least 2 years of full-time study in English in certain countries may be exempt. Note: The student visa itself typically requires an approved English test result. InterLing recommends PTE as the fastest and most student-friendly alternative to IELTS for Tamil Nadu students.
Australia has two main intakes: Semester 1 (February) and Semester 2 (July). February intake is the primary intake with the widest course availability, most scholarships and maximum cohort size. July intake is the secondary intake with good availability — ideal for students who missed February deadlines or are waiting for final exam results. A small number of programs offer a November/Summer intake for specific courses. For most Indian students, February intake is recommended as it aligns with the Indian academic year (graduation in May/June → apply October–November → start studies February next year). July intake suits students graduating in November/December who want to avoid a long gap. InterWise helps plan your application timeline based on your current academic stage and preferred intake.
Tuition and fees can be remitted from India to Australia through: (1) Bank wire transfer (telegraphic transfer) — most common, requires Form A2 with RBI purpose code S0305 (education); (2) Flywire — a popular education payment platform accepted by most Australian universities, converts INR to AUD at competitive rates; (3) Western Union Education — another university payment portal; (4) TransferWise/Wise — competitive exchange rates for smaller amounts. InterFx provides AUD exchange rates up to 2% better than traditional Indian banks, which translates to savings of ₹40,000–₹1,20,000 over a 2-year program. Pre-departure, InterFx also loads AUD onto multi-currency forex cards so students have immediate access to funds when landing in Australia.
CRICOS (Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students) is Australia's official register of institutions and courses approved for international students. Every university, TAFE, and course that accepts international students on a student visa must be CRICOS-registered. If you enrol at a non-CRICOS institution, your student visa will not be valid and you may face deportation. When choosing a university or course, always verify the CRICOS code listed on the course page and confirm it matches your CoE. Reputable universities like Go8 institutions, RMIT, Deakin and Curtin are all CRICOS-registered. Avoid unaccredited "diploma mills" that target Indian students with suspiciously cheap tuition and guaranteed admission. InterWise only recommends CRICOS-registered universities with strong international student track records.
Group of Eight (Go8) universities (Melbourne, Sydney, UNSW, ANU, UQ, Monash, Adelaide, UWA) are research-intensive with stronger global brand recognition, higher entry requirements, larger funding and better research facilities. They generally have better global employer name recognition. Non-Go8 universities (RMIT, Macquarie, Curtin, Deakin, La Trobe, UTS, Griffith) typically have: stronger industry-focused practical programs, more accessible entry requirements, often better placement rates in specific industries (e.g., RMIT for design and media, Deakin for nursing, Curtin for mining engineering), and sometimes better value for tuition cost vs career outcome. For Indian students, the choice depends on career path: research or academia → Go8; practical industry career → top non-Go8 programs may be equally or more valuable. InterWise uses career outcome data, OPT equivalents (485 visa job rates) and India-specific acceptance rates to guide your university choice.
Top Australian MBA programs for Indian students: Melbourne Business School (MBS) — Australia's highest-ranked, 18-month full-time MBA, strong Asia-Pacific connections; UNSW Business School — Sydney location, strong finance and consulting recruitment; Macquarie Business School — established reputation with Macquarie Group links; Monash Business School — Melbourne-based, strong for IT-business professionals; RMIT Business — industry-focused, Melbourne; UQ Business School — Brisbane, strong regional market; QUT Business School — Brisbane, entrepreneurship focus; University of Adelaide Business School — affordable, regional SA nomination possible. Most Australian MBAs do not mandate GMAT but may consider it as a bonus. 2–5 years of work experience is typically expected. Indian IT professionals transitioning to management find Australian MBAs a faster and more affordable alternative to US programs. Average post-MBA salary in Australia: AUD $90,000–$130,000.
The Australia Awards Scholarship is the Australian Government's flagship international scholarship program — a fully funded, highly competitive award for citizens of developing countries including India. Unlike university merit scholarships (partial fee waivers), Australia Awards covers: full tuition at any Australian university, living allowance (~AUD $32,000/year), return economy airfare to India, establishment allowance for initial setup, OSHC coverage, and a pre-course English training allowance if needed. Eligibility: Indian citizen, minimum 2 years full-time work experience after bachelor's degree, not currently enrolled in an Australian program. Applications are managed through the Australia Awards website and USIEF India. The scholarship cycle opens February–April each year, with outcomes announced in October. Competition is intense — InterWise helps eligible students with strategic scholarship applications alongside university applications.
Popular part-time jobs for Indian students in Australia: Retail (Woolworths, Coles, Aldi, Target) — AUD $24–$28/hr; Food delivery (UberEats, DoorDash, Menulog) — AUD $18–$28/hr with flexible hours; Indian restaurants and cafes — AUD $24–$30/hr with tips; Campus jobs (library, tutoring, administration) — AUD $28–$40/hr, highly flexible; IT support and helpdesk (for IT students) — AUD $28–$45/hr; Grocery delivery packing (Woolworths) — AUD $24–$32/hr; Childcare assistant — AUD $26–$32/hr; Hotel/housekeeping — AUD $24–$30/hr. The Fair Work Act protects all workers including international students — employers cannot pay below minimum wage. Report underpaying employers to the Fair Work Ombudsman. InterBuddy connects arriving students with community job boards and Indian restaurant networks for quick first-week employment opportunities.
Indian students working in Australia on a student visa must pay Australian income tax. Key points: (1) Get a Tax File Number (TFN) from the ATO (ato.gov.au) within your first week — free process, takes 28 days; (2) Provide TFN to employer — without it, employers withhold tax at the highest rate (45%); (3) Tax rates for non-residents (first 6 months): 32.5% on all earnings; (4) After 6 months living in Australia, you may qualify as a tax resident — lower rates: 19% on income AUD $18,201–$45,000; (5) File your tax return annually by October 31 using myTax on myGov portal; (6) Students often receive a tax refund if withheld tax exceeds their liability. India-Australia DTAA (Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement) prevents double taxation on the same income. InterBuddy provides a tax setup guide during orientation to help students avoid common mistakes.
The Destination Australia Scholarship is an Australian Government program encouraging international students to study at regional universities and campuses outside major cities. Awards are up to AUD $15,000/year for each year of study. Regional universities eligible: Charles Sturt University, Federation University, University of Southern Queensland (UniSQ), Charles Darwin University, University of New England (UNE), and regional campuses of larger universities like La Trobe (Bendigo, Albury-Wodonga). Benefits beyond the scholarship: studying regionally adds 5 extra migration points toward PR applications (Subclass 190/491), and regional areas have more affordable living costs (AUD $200–$400 less per month than Sydney/Melbourne). Good for Indian students willing to live in smaller regional cities in exchange for reduced costs and better PR points accumulation.
Adelaide is increasingly popular among Indian students and is considered one of Australia's most hidden gems for international education. Key advantages: (1) Most affordable major Australian city — monthly living costs 25–30% lower than Sydney; (2) South Australia is one of the most active state nominators for Subclass 190 (state-nominated PR) — IT, engineering, healthcare and accounting graduates are prioritised; (3) Growing defence and cybersecurity sector — Adelaide is home to major defence contractors (BAE Systems, Lockheed Martin, ASC); (4) University of Adelaide (Go8) and Flinders University offer excellent programs; (5) Strong and growing Indian community with regular cultural events; (6) Safe — consistently ranked one of the world's most liveable cities. Indian students who study in Adelaide and work in SA for 2 years qualify for an additional 5 PR migration points under the state nomination pathway.
For a February intake (Semester 1): Month 1–2: Profile assessment with InterWise, IELTS/PTE test if not done; Month 3–4: University shortlisting and SOP/GTE preparation; Month 5–6: Application submission (October–November); Month 7–8: Receive admission offers (December–January); Month 9: Accept offer, pay deposit, receive CoE, purchase OSHC; Month 10: Submit Subclass 500 visa application; Month 11–12: Visa grant (4–8 weeks processing); Month 12: Pre-departure orientation with InterBuddy, forex card from InterFx, flight booking; Month 12+: Arrive in Australia (January). For a July intake, the same process but shifted by 5 months. Starting InterEd's counselling process 12–18 months before your intended start date is highly recommended for the smoothest experience.
Based on feedback from Tamil Nadu students already in Australia, the most recommended cities are: Melbourne — largest Tamil community outside India in Australia, active Tamil Sangam, South Indian restaurants widely available, Pongal and Tamil New Year celebrations are major community events. Multiple Go8 and industry universities. Sydney — strong Tamil community in Parramatta, Blacktown and Seven Hills. Large Indian population, Sri Venkateswara Temple in Helensburgh. Best job market for IT and finance; Adelaide — growing Tamil community, very affordable, SA state nomination for PR is accessible, University of Adelaide and Flinders offer good programs; Brisbane — growing South Indian community in Sunnybank (known as "Little Asia"), affordable compared to Sydney/Melbourne, warm climate similar to Tamil Nadu. Yes — Australia's Research Training Program (RTP) provides full funding for domestic and international PhD students. RTP covers: full tuition fee waiver for the duration of the PhD, living stipend of approximately AUD $32,000/year (tax-free for PhD students), relocation allowance and some thesis writing support. RTP scholarships are highly competitive — typically awarded to students with strong research backgrounds, publications or honours degrees. Most Australian universities offer 50–300+ RTP positions per year. To access RTP funding, you typically need to identify a potential supervisor, submit a research proposal and secure an informal agreement from the supervisor before formally applying. Niche funding also comes from ARC (Australian Research Council) Linkage grants through your supervisor. InterWise connects Indian students interested in Australian PhD programs with potential supervisors based on their research area — an often overlooked but critical first step.

Opening a bank account in Australia is straightforward and can be done before you arrive. Most major Australian banks allow pre-arrival online account opening: Commonwealth Bank (CBA) — most popular with Indian students, easy app, Indian language support at some branches; ANZ — good student accounts; Westpac — international student account (no monthly fees); NAB — another good option. Documents needed on arrival to activate: passport, student visa (Subclass 500 grant letter), CoE, Australian address. Accounts can be set up online in 5 minutes before departure from India — just bring documents to a branch within 3 months to activate and receive your card. Many banks have branches on or near university campuses. Banking apps are excellent for managing expenses, bill splitting and tracking study-related spending. InterBuddy's settlement program includes a bank account activation walkthrough during your first week in Australia.
A Tax File Number (TFN) is Australia's unique identifier for tax purposes — similar to India's PAN card. Every person who works or earns income in Australia needs a TFN. Apply for a TFN through the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) website within your first week — it's free and takes 28 days to arrive. Without a TFN, employers must withhold 47% of your wages as tax. With your TFN, tax withheld is based on your actual tax bracket (typically 19–32.5% for working students). Provide your TFN to your university for any scholarship or stipend payments, to your bank for interest income and to your employer. Keep your TFN confidential — do not share it unnecessarily. At year end, use myGov/ATO online to lodge your tax return and claim any refund. InterBuddy's orientation includes TFN application guidance as a Day 1 priority for newly arrived Indian students.
Yes, but there are restrictions for students in their first 6 months of study. During the first 6 months, you can transfer to another CRICOS-registered institution only if your current provider has agreed to the release (by providing a Release Letter) OR if there are exceptional circumstances (genuine hardship, harassment, university closing a course). After 6 months, you can transfer more freely by following a specific process: obtain your academic transcript from current institution, apply and gain admission to new institution, receive new CoE, apply for a new student visa with updated CoE (or update enrolment details with DHA if visa conditions allow). Transferring may affect your course completion timeline and 485 visa duration. Course credits from the original university may not fully transfer. InterWise provides strategic guidance on whether a transfer is genuinely beneficial or whether staying and completing is better for your career and PR timeline.
ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admission Rank) is the ranking system used for domestic Australian students applying to undergraduate programs — it does not directly apply to international students. Indian students applying for undergraduate programs to Australia are assessed on their 12th standard marks, English test scores (IELTS/PTE) and sometimes additional assessments. Equivalent ATAR for admissions: 90+ ATAR programs typically require 85%+ in 12th standard (PCM for STEM, PCB for science); 75–85 ATAR programs accept 70–80% in 12th standard. Some Australian universities run Foundation Studies programs (1 year) for Indian students with lower 12th marks, after which they progress to the bachelor's degree. This pathway is excellent for students who scored below 70% but want to study at a quality Australian institution. InterWise identifies the most appropriate UG entry pathway for your specific 12th standard marks and chosen field.
Medicare is Australia's universal healthcare system — available to Australian citizens, permanent residents and certain visa holders. Unfortunately, most international student visa (Subclass 500) holders are NOT eligible for Medicare unless their home country has a Reciprocal Healthcare Agreement with Australia. India does NOT have such an agreement with Australia, meaning Indian students are not eligible for Medicare. This is why OSHC (Overseas Student Health Cover) is mandatory — it serves as your health insurance replacement for Medicare. Under OSHC, GP visits cost AUD $0–$40 out-of-pocket, specialist visits AUD $50–$100 co-payment, and hospital stays are covered. When on the 485 Graduate Temporary Visa (after graduation), Indian students still cannot access Medicare unless transitioning to PR. Always carry your OSHC card for all medical appointments in Australia.
Most affordable study options in Australia for Indian students: (1) Regional universities — Charles Sturt University (Bathurst, Wagga Wagga), Federation University (Ballarat), University of New England (Armidale), UniSQ (Toowoomba) — tuition AUD $22,000–$30,000/year, living costs AUD $800–$1,200/month; (2) University of Southern Queensland — Toowoomba or Ipswich, AUD $800–$1,100/month living; (3) Flinders University (Adelaide) — Go8-adjacent quality at more accessible price, strong for nursing; (4) Curtin University (Perth) — Perth is 15% cheaper than Sydney/Melbourne; (5) University of Adelaide — competitive tuition with city quality. Living in regional Australia saves AUD $300–$600/month compared to Sydney/Melbourne while also earning extra PR migration points. Destination Australia scholarships of up to AUD $15,000/year are available at many regional universities, effectively making them the most cost-effective study option in Australia for budget-conscious Indian families.
Australian student visa refusals typically fall under two main categories: (1) Failure to meet GTE requirements — the assessor was not satisfied that you genuinely intend to study temporarily; (2) Failure to demonstrate financial capacity — insufficient funds evidence. Steps after refusal: (1) Carefully read the refusal notice — it will specify the exact reason; (2) You can request a merits review through the Administrative Appeals Tribunal (AAT) within 21 days of refusal if you disagree with the decision; (3) Alternatively, address the weak areas and reapply with stronger documentation — there is no mandatory waiting period; (4) For GTE-based refusals: strengthen your GTE statement with more specific career plans and India ties evidence; (5) For financial refusals: provide additional bank statements, FD proofs, or education loan sanction letter. InterEd's 98% visa success rate is built on preventing refusals through thorough preparation.
