Earn While You Study — Co-op Programs

Canada's co-operative education model integrates paid work terms into your degree. Students in co-op programs earn CAD 18–28/hr during work terms, often recovering 40–60% of annual tuition — a unique advantage unavailable in most other countries. With the Dr. Ambedkar Scholarship (₹36L) and numerous university merit awards, Indian students from Namakkal, Salem and Coimbatore can make Canada genuinely affordable.

🛂 Visa Advantage

SDS — Fastest Visa Processing for Indians

The Student Direct Stream (SDS) was created specifically for Indian applicants. With IELTS 6.0+, GIC of CAD 10,200, and first-year fees paid, your study permit is typically processed in 20 days — compared to 8–12 weeks on the regular stream. No other major study destination offers this level of priority processing for Indian students.

🏡 PR Pathway 🌟

World's Clearest Route from Student to Permanent Resident

No country offers a more transparent PR pathway for Indian students than Canada. Graduate → PGWP (up to 3 years) → Canadian work experience → Express Entry CRS points → Permanent Residency. Many graduates from Tamil Nadu obtain PR within 3–5 years of arriving. Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs) like Ontario's and British Columbia's offer additional routes tailored for international graduates.

Canada Study Permit Process for Indians

Step-by-step visa process for Indian students — including the SDS (Student Direct Stream) fast-track for 20-day processing.

1
Step 1 · Preparation

IELTS / Language Test & Score Target

Complete IELTS Academic (SDS requires minimum 6.0 with no band below 6.0). Higher scores (6.5–7.0) open more university options and increase study permit approval chances. InterEd's InterLing service provides dedicated IELTS coaching for Tamil Nadu students in Namakkal, Salem, and Erode.

2
Step 2 · Application

Apply to University / College & Receive Acceptance Letter

Apply to 3–5 shortlisted institutions. Upon acceptance, you'll receive a Letter of Acceptance (LOA) — this is mandatory for your study permit application. InterEd's InterWise team handles university shortlisting, SOP writing, and application submission.

3
Step 3 · Financial Proof

GIC (Guaranteed Investment Certificate) & Tuition Payment

For SDS: Open a GIC account with a IRCC-approved Canadian bank (CAD 10,200 minimum) and pay the first year's tuition fees. This financial proof is essential for SDS eligibility. InterEd's InterFx assists with GIC arrangements and international tuition remittances.

4
Step 4 · Application

Submit Study Permit Application Online (IRCC Portal)

Create your IRCC account and submit your study permit (IMM 1294) online. Include: LOA, GIC confirmation, IELTS results, financial documents, passport, photos, SOP. SDS applicants should clearly mark eligibility. Biometrics appointment at VFS may be required.

5
Step 5 · Processing

Wait for Processing — SDS: ~20 Days; Regular: 8–12 Weeks

SDS applications are typically processed in approximately 20 calendar days. Regular stream takes 8–12 weeks. InterEd tracks your application status and communicates any IRCC document requests immediately.

6
Step 6 · Approval

Receive Port of Entry (POE) Letter & eTA

Upon approval, you receive a POE Introduction Letter (study permit is issued at the border) and must apply for an Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) if flying into Canada. Carry all original documents for border inspection.

7
Step 7 · Arrival

Land in Canada & Collect Study Permit

Present your POE letter at the Canadian border. CBSA officer issues your actual Study Permit document. After arrival, activate your GIC, open a bank account, get your SIN card, and set up healthcare coverage (OHIP in Ontario takes 3 months to activate — get private insurance for first 3 months).

Post-Study Work Rights in Canada

Canada's Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) is one of the most generous post-study work visa programs in the world for Indian graduates.

📄 Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP)

Up to 3 Years

Graduate from a PGWP-eligible institution → apply for PGWP within 180 days of graduation. Duration matches your program length (up to 3 years for 2+ year programs). Open work permit — work for any employer anywhere in Canada.

🏡 Permanent Residency Pathway

3–5 Years

PGWP experience + Canadian education + English score → Apply via Express Entry (CEC stream) or Provincial Nominee Programs (ONP, BCPNP, AINP). Graduates from Tamil Nadu regularly obtain PR within 3–5 years of arrival in Canada.

🌟 Canadian Experience Class (CEC)

1 Year Exp Needed

With just 1 year of skilled Canadian work experience (NOC TEER 0, 1, 2 or 3), you can apply to CEC under Express Entry. CEC draws are frequent and CRS cutoffs are generally lower than FSW, giving graduates a realistic path to PR.

🏛️ Provincial Nominee Programs (PNP)

Multiple Routes

Ontario's OINP, BC's BCPNP, Alberta's AINP all have streams specifically designed for international graduates from their provinces. A provincial nomination adds 600 points to your CRS score — virtually guaranteeing an ITA in the next Express Entry draw.

Work While Studying in Canada

Indian students in Canada can legally work during and between semesters — helping manage living costs and building Canadian work experience for PR applications.

📚 During Academic Semester

24 hrs/week

As of November 2024, eligible international students can work up to 24 hours per week off-campus during scheduled study periods (previously 20 hrs). On-campus work is unrestricted. Typical earnings: CAD 16–20/hr in major cities.

☀️ During Scheduled Breaks

Full-Time

During scheduled academic breaks (summer, winter holidays), students may work full-time with no hour restrictions. This is a great opportunity to maximise savings and build Canadian work experience during May–August break.

🤝 Co-op / Internship Work Terms

Full-Time (Paid)

Students enrolled in co-op programs work full-time during designated work terms (4–8 months). Earnings range from CAD 18–40/hr depending on field. Co-op work is covered by your study permit — no separate work permit needed.

💰 Estimated Annual Earnings

CAD 18,000–35,000

Working 24 hrs/week during semester + full-time during summer break + co-op terms, a student in STEM or business can earn CAD 18,000–35,000/yr (≈ ₹11L–₹21L) — potentially covering a large portion of living expenses.

Student Life in Canada

Everything Indian students need to know about daily life, from Tamil community support to healthcare and campus experience.

🏠

Accommodation

On-campus residences are safe and convenient but fill up fast — apply early. Off-campus shared apartments are popular and more affordable. Facebook groups and South Asian student networks (including Tamil groups) help find roommates. Many Tamil Nadu students form flatsharing groups in Brampton, Mississauga, and Surrey.

🚌

Transport

All major cities have excellent public transit. Students get discounted monthly passes (TTC in Toronto, TransLink in Vancouver, OC Transpo in Ottawa). Uber and biking are common for shorter trips. Students in smaller cities like Windsor or Waterloo often cycle.

🍛

Food & Indian Community

Toronto's Brampton and Scarborough, Vancouver's Surrey, and Ottawa have thriving Tamil communities with South Indian restaurants, grocery stores stocking idli rice, toor dal, and tamarind. Tamil cultural associations host Pongal, Deepavali, and other events. You'll feel at home.

📱

Phone & Banking

Get a Canadian SIM (Rogers, Bell, Telus or Freedom Mobile — Freedom often cheapest for students). Open a bank account with TD, RBC, or Scotiabank (all offer free student accounts). Your GIC opens automatically when you land — take the activation letter to the bank within 10 days.

🏥

Healthcare

Provincial health insurance (OHIP in Ontario, MSP in BC) covers most medical needs — but Ontario has a 3-month waiting period. Get private insurance (GUARD.me or equivalent) for the first 3 months. Most campuses have a student health centre and counselling services.

🎓

Campus Life

Canadian campuses have active Indian and Tamil student associations, cricket clubs, and cultural events. Volunteering, networking, and part-time campus jobs are common. Most universities have dedicated International Student Services offices with dedicated support for South Asian students.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the most common questions from Indian students — especially from Tamil Nadu — about studying in Canada.

Canada remains one of the top study destinations for Indian students in 2025. With world-ranked universities, the SDS fast-track visa, the PGWP (up to 3 years), and a direct PR pathway through Express Entry, Canada offers the clearest route from education to permanent residency. Over 3.2 lakh Indian students currently study in Canada, backed by a community of 1.6 million Indians. Despite some tightening of international student policies in 2024, Canada remains open, welcoming, and highly rewarding for well-prepared students.
The Student Direct Stream (SDS) is a faster study permit processing channel for Indian students, typically processing applications in approximately 20 days. To qualify for SDS, you must: (1) hold a valid acceptance letter from a CGWP-eligible institution, (2) have IELTS score of 6.0 or higher (no band below 6.0), (3) have a GIC of CAD 10,200 from an approved Canadian bank, and (4) have paid the first year's tuition. SDS dramatically reduces uncertainty in your Canada planning timeline. InterEd Namakkal guides all Tamil Nadu students through SDS preparation.
Annual tuition ranges from CAD 14,000–40,000 (≈ ₹8.5L–₹24.4L) depending on university and program. Add CAD 10,000–18,000/year for living expenses. Total annual budget: CAD 24,000–58,000 (≈ ₹14.6L–₹35.4L). However, co-op earnings (CAD 18,000–35,000/yr), scholarships, and part-time work can significantly offset these costs. Education loans are widely available from Indian banks including SBI, HDFC Credila and others with competitive interest rates for Canada study.
Canada has three intakes: Fall (September) — the primary and most important intake with widest course availability; Winter (January) — secondary intake, available for most PG programs; and Summer (May) — minor intake for selected college programs. The September intake is strongly recommended for Tamil Nadu students as it offers the most scholarships, course choices, and co-op opportunities. Students should ideally start their IELTS prep by January–February to comfortably apply for September.
IELTS Academic is the most widely accepted English test for Canada. For SDS (fast-track visa), IELTS 6.0 overall with no band below 6.0 is mandatory. For university admission, IELTS 6.5–7.0 is typically required for PG programs. Some universities also accept TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, Duolingo English Test, or Cambridge C1 Advanced. However, for students from Namakkal, Salem and Coimbatore, InterEd strongly recommends IELTS as it's the most widely recognised and simplest to prepare for with our InterLing coaching.
After graduating from a PGWP-eligible Canadian institution, you can apply for a PGWP within 180 days of receiving your final marks. The PGWP duration equals your program length — up to 3 years for 2-year+ programs. It's an open work permit, meaning you can work for any employer in any province. This Canadian work experience is critical for Express Entry CEC applications for Permanent Residency. Co-op work terms during your degree also count as Canadian experience, giving you a significant head start.
Yes — Canada has the world's most transparent PR pathway for international students. After graduating and working on your PGWP, you can apply through: (1) Express Entry — Canadian Experience Class (CEC) with just 1 year of skilled Canadian work experience, (2) Provincial Nominee Programs (ONP, BCPNP, AINP) which have dedicated streams for international graduates, or (3) Atlantic Immigration Program for those in Nova Scotia, NB, PEI or Newfoundland. Many students from Namakkal and Tamil Nadu obtain Canadian PR within 3–5 years of arriving. Co-op work terms during study also contribute to this timeline.
As of November 2024, eligible international students can work up to 24 hours per week off-campus during their study period (an increase from the previous 20 hours). On-campus work is unlimited. During scheduled academic breaks (summer, winter), students may work full-time. Co-op work terms are full-time and covered under the study permit. This combination can yield annual earnings of CAD 18,000–35,000 (≈ ₹11L–₹21L), significantly helping with living costs in Canada.
Students from Tamil Nadu should first check the Dr. Ambedkar Overseas Scholarship (up to ₹36L — government of Tamil Nadu for SC/ST students). At the Canadian level, the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships (CAD 50,000/yr for doctoral students), University of Toronto's Lester B. Pearson Scholarship, and UBC's International Major Entrance Scholarship are prestigious options. Most universities also offer entrance merit awards ranging from CAD 2,000–15,000. InterEd's team identifies all applicable scholarships and handles applications on behalf of our students from Namakkal, Erode, Coimbatore, and Salem.
Canada consistently ranks among the world's safest countries (Global Peace Index top 10). Crimes targeting international students are rare, and Canadian law strongly protects the rights of international students. Cities with large Indian populations (Toronto/Brampton, Vancouver/Surrey, Ottawa) have well-established Tamil and South Asian communities that support new arrivals. That said, like any major city globally, standard urban safety precautions apply — avoid poorly lit areas late at night and be cautious of scam calls/emails targeting new students.
Toronto (Ontario) — most Indian students, biggest Tamil community, largest job market but highest cost. Vancouver (BC) — scenic, tech hub, large South Asian community. Ottawa — national capital, bilingual, manageable cost. Waterloo/Kitchener — co-op capital of Canada (University of Waterloo), affordable. Halifax (Nova Scotia) — very affordable, Atlantic Immigration Program offers fast PR, growing Tamil community. Calgary (Alberta) — no provincial income tax, strong energy sector, growing tech scene. For Tamil Nadu students seeking affordability + PR speed, Halifax and Waterloo are increasingly popular choices.
A Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) is a financial instrument issued by a Canadian bank proving you have funds to support yourself during your studies. For the SDS (Student Direct Stream), a GIC of minimum CAD 10,200 (≈ ₹6.2L) from an IRCC-approved institution is mandatory. Approved banks include TD, CIBC, RBC, Scotiabank, BMO, National Bank and several others. The GIC is released to you in monthly instalments after you arrive in Canada, effectively functioning as your living expense fund. InterFx by InterEd facilitates GIC arrangements from Namakkal at competitive rates.

Canada's job market for STEM, healthcare, and business graduates remains strong despite global economic headwinds. IT and software roles (average CAD 75,000–110,000/yr), data science (CAD 70,000–100,000), nursing and allied health (CAD 65,000–95,000), and engineering roles are in high demand. Canada's immigration policy actively aims to retain international graduates — PGWP holders are given priority in Express Entry draws. Co-op graduates with Canadian work experience from institutions like University of Waterloo or UBC typically receive job offers before graduation. Tamil Nadu students with strong English skills and technical backgrounds are highly employable in the Canadian market.
